The Cedar Rapids Fire Department Honor Guard performs ceremonial duties at memorials, funerals and special events. The Honor Guard was created in 1997 following the death of firefighter Bob Chapman and was one of the first fire department Honor Guards in Iowa. Its 21 members volunteer their time to perform the Honor Guard’s duties as well as train other fire department Honor Guards throughout the region. The Cedar Rapids Fire Department Honor Guard attends funerals of active duty firefighters and member of their immediate family, retired firefighters, firefighters and police officers from surrounding communities, and members of Cedar Rapids Local government.
